Call for Judges: GPSC Student Showcase

My name is Patrice Moritz, and I am the Events Director for the Graduate and Professional Student Council. The Student Showcase is the largest student-run research exhibition here at the University of Arizona. I would like to invite you to be a judge for the Student Showcase 2018, which will take place Wednesday, February 21st on the UA Mall.

This year, judges will need to be available from 8:30 am until 12:00 pm on Wednesday, February 21st. Breakfast will be available beginning at 8am, and judge's orientation will start at 8:30 am in the student union. Judging panels are usually composed of graduate students, faculty, staff, and Tucson community members. The judges will then move on to the mall with their panel to the Showcase tents to begin judging projects. Each panel will score around eight projects, depending on the category they are judging. In addition to breakfast, lunch will be provided for all judges.

Your support for Student Showcase and the students of the University of Arizona is much appreciated.

Arrangements will be made for FREE parking for the off-campus judges.

The four judging categories are as follows (categories this year are based on the project topic, not the academic discipline):

Community & Society

* Pertains to all research that involves participatory research or community engagements.

* Research and studies that involve direct relations to community and/or business partnerships

* Examples would be projects from sociology, psychology, planning, public health, etc.

Creative Expression

* Projects and research that has an emphasis on creative thinking and expression (including qualitative research that emphasizes creative thinking and expression as well).

* Examples would be projects from Fine Arts, Literature, Architecture, Computer Sciences, etc.

Education

* Pertains to all research and studies that focus and deal with issues in education.

Research

* Pertains to all other research topics that do not fall into the previous categories.

If you are interested in becoming a Student Showcase judge, please contact Patrice Moritz at 626-6122 or gpscevents at email.arizona.edu<mailto:gpscevents at email.arizona.edu> at your earliest convenience and no later than Friday, January 24th. Please respond using the link below with the top two categories you would feel most comfortable serving as a judge as well as your current job title.

Workshops

Our fall workshops will provide you with practical help with the challenges you face in your research and teaching. In evaluations from previous years, 95% of respondents agreed that they benefited from this workshop. Overall, the three series offered in our Campus Connections workshop program address a broad range of challenges faced in academia.

* Getting Published<http://diversity.arizona.edu/getting-published> includes opportunities to learn about grants, book proposals, and faculty writing groups.

* Advancing Faculty Careers<http://diversity.arizona.edu/advancing-faculty-careers> will provide you with practical strategies on mentoring, combatting imposter syndrome, and addressing gender differences in academic careers.

* The Diversity in the Classroom<http://diversity.arizona.edu/diversity-classroom> series provides workshops on creating inclusive classrooms and includes an opportunity to earn a "Leader in Classroom Diversity & Inclusion" certificate.

Given that mentoring is so beneficial to people in academia, we're excited to announce that all of our graduate students are eligible to create free accounts for the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (NCFDD)<http://diversity.arizona.edu/national-center-faculty-development-diversity>. This nationally recognized organization provides online career development and mentoring resources that can increase success with publications and securing external funding, increase confidence as a researcher and scholar, lead to healthier relationships with departmental colleagues, and provide external mentors, sponsors, and collaborators.

We hope that you take advantage of these exciting programs. All of our programming is based on research and best practices shown to increase success, and we want you to feel happy, successful, and satisfied at the University of Arizona. If you have questions or comments, please email Laura Hunter at lahunter at email.arizona.edu<mailto:lahunter at email.arizona.edu>.
