Graduate Center Newsletter
Issue 3, October 2017

Message from the Dean
This issue of the Graduate Center newsletter is about communities. Graduate students are at the forefront of our land grant mission to serve local, state, national, and international communities. As researchers, artists, and teachers, graduate students generate new knowledge, forge connections with people and ideas, address local and global challenges. They build opportunities and foster innovation for multiple communities.
And along with postdoctoral scholars, graduate students are themselves a vital community. The Graduate Center and Postdoctoral Affairs office provide both groups with professional development support and serve as a clearinghouse of wide-ranging institutional resources. Read on to learn more about how graduate students, postdocs, and their communities are shaping a changing world.

An Artist's Local Projects with Global Perspectives
Khaled Jarrar is the epitome of the global artist. His work has been exhibited in art shows around the world, including Italy, France, Serbia, Canada, Indonesia, England, Palestine, Switzerland, and the United States. This past July, Jarrar was an invited speaker at the British Museum. He is also a former soldier, an international scholar, and a current University Fellow creating exciting and provocative art.

A Fresh Focus on Postdocs
Postdoctoral scholars are a vital part of the research and instruction mission at the University of Arizona, but they received very little attention or support in the past. Dr. Jenny Hoit, along with the members of the newly-formed Postdoctoral Affairs office and the University of Arizona Postdoctoral Association, is working to change that.

Making Mental Health a Priority
For graduate students working to meet their many obligations, taking care of their mental health can seem easier said than done. Campus initiatives, however, are making the doing just as easy. Whether graduate students prefer their mental health care approach to be in-person or digital, individual or collective, there’s an option for everyone.

The Collective Success of Green Streets
On paper, collaborative interdisciplinary work is straightforward: it brings together individuals from different fields to create innovative approaches to complex challenges. In reality, though, it can be difficult for collaborators to manage their individual priorities, channel their skills, and equally engage in collective projects. It takes committed participants to ensure that efforts don’t devolve into unequal workloads, non-communicative partners, or deferred goals. Green Streets in South Tucson, featured in the Graduate Center’s Spring 2017 Interdisciplinary Collaborations Lecture Series, is one such interdisciplinary success story.
