The Graduate Center, in collaboration with the Office for Research & Discovery and the School of Mind, Brain, and Behavior, is sponsoring a visit by two internationally acclaimed speakers, Beth A. Fischer and Michael J. Zigmond (bios attached), who will be giving four talks/workshops on March 8 and 9. Drs. Zigmond and Fischer are known for their work in neuroscience, research ethics, and professional development, having conducted workshops in Asia, Africa, Europe, and North and South America.

1:00-2:30 PM (Thomas W. Keating Bioresearch Building, Room 103) -- Moving through your career: from graduate school to postdoctoral training to employment.

This workshop will focus on such issues as selecting your advisor and your project, seeking the next position, preparing resumes and curriculum vitae, and negotiating. It will be geared toward graduate students and postdocs. Faculty advisors are also welcome to attend. Reception to follow. 5:30-6:30 PM (Thomas W. Keating Bioresearch Building, Room 103) -- Lifestyle and brain health: From hunter gatherer to today and the rise of non-communicative disease.

We will trace how our lifestyle has changed over the past 10,000 years and its consequences for "health span" with particular focus on the brain and the non-communicative diseases that affect it, such as neurodegenerative disease. Aspects of lifestyle to be discussed will include stress, physical and cognitive exercise, and diet. This jargon-free lecture is open to the academic community and beyond, and no special knowledge will be required.

12:00-1:00 PM (Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences Building, Room 205) -- Physical exercise and environmental enrichment as neuroprotective strategies: Studies with models of Parkinson's disease

3:00-6:00 PM (Student Union, Kiva Auditorium) -- Writing research papers: From idea to publication.

This workshop will cover the structure of peer-reviewed research papers and the process of preparing them. Included will be key areas of responsible conduct, including the selection of authors, conflict of interest, plagiarism, and sharing of materials.
