Oh Behalf of Drs. Brown and Schmidt:

Please consider enrolling in the journal club being offered this Fall -PLS 595B

Instructors: Drs. J Brown and M. Schmidt

Title: Current topics in Plant Biotechnology and Applied Plant Biology

Time: Thursday 3:30pm Shantz 247 ( time negotiable)

Format: oral presentation / lead discussion. Group discussions: two topics/presenters/term

Course Purpose, Objectives, and Expected Outcomes

Primary and seminal literature searches, readings, and selected study systems will be identified
by the students and/or the instructor. The course is designed to enable students to become
familiar with historical and current topical literature. The students will develop new insights about
plant biotechnology and applied plant biology. The area is vast and can be focused to each individual
student interests: engineering biotic (pathogen resistance) or abiotic stress resistant
( salt, heat, drought, cold), enhancing plant nutrition, producing pharmaceuticals, etc.
An important goal will be to foster development of the skills needed
to critically evaluate the primary research literature and effectively communicate
scientific concepts orally and in writing. Successful completion of the course will lead to a
better understanding of the concepts that underlie the concepts of applied plant biology and
provide valuable preparation for more advanced courses, and enhance critical thinking in
experimental design to address relevant research questions.
