Are you interested in learning more about teaching at the college level, working and communicating with adult learners, or exploring the scholarship of teaching and learning? Would you like to improve your knowledge and skills in these areas to help with a TA'ship, the job market, and your future? Consider taking college teaching courses or earning a Certificate in College Teaching (http://cct.oia.arizona.edu/)
Graduate-level courses are open to all postbaccalaureate graduate students, postdocs, faculty, and staff. These courses can be taken individually OR as part of the Certificate in College Teaching<http://cct.oia.arizona.edu/>.
Courses for Spring 2017:
IA 697a: Learner-Centered Teaching (offered Spring and Fall semesters)
Fridays 3–5:30 pm
This course provides a foundation in learner-centered teaching, and includes scholarship of college-level teaching and learning, approaches to course and lesson design, techniques to implement and assess active and collaborative learning, and development of reflective teaching practices. Appropriate for anyone interested in learning more about college-level teaching or adult education.
IA 680: Classroom Assessment (fully online – offered Spring semesters only)
A comprehensive review of the literature on classroom assessment strategies and methods as related to course design, measurement of student learning outcomes, and examination of instructional methods and practices. Emphasis will be placed on interpretation of assessment as the definer of the curricular design process as well as the practical application of classroom and online methods that effectively assess student and course success.
IA 699: Independent Study (offered Fall and Spring)
Students may register for 1-3 units of independent study during which they will explore, under supervision of an OIA faculty member, the theory, practices, and/or literature of specific areas of interest in college teaching and learning such as online instruction, course level assessment, or other topics related to learning-centered instruction. Note: IA 699 credit is available for OIA Online Mini-courses (see http://oia.arizona.edu/node/30 for further details)
IA 694: Instructional Practicum (offered Fall and Spring – Note: IA 697a is a prerequisite for this course.)
Fridays 11-12:30 pm
This course provides individual mentoring in applying principles of learner-centered teaching to adult education contexts, reflecting on teaching practice, and documenting teaching expertise. Primary components of the course include seminar-style meetings, observations of teaching, peer reviews, and the development of a professional-quality teaching portfolio.
