Dear graduate students,
I'm writing to compliment you on your excellent choice for your invited
speaker, Dr. Leon Kochian. As you know from Courtney's emails, he will
speak on Oct. 28.
I would like to invite you to please sign up to talk with Dr. Kochian
during his visit. Even if his work is outside your area of focus, you will
learn something -- or discover potential connections -- from talking with
him. Moreover, an important aspect of professional development lies in
becoming comfortable in talking with colleagues (senior and otherwise) both
in and outside our specific focus areas. This is not only a great chance to
practice, but also a chance to help Dr. Kochian appreciate the quality of
our graduate program...something that will serve you well after graduation.
And what a great chance to discuss science with a distinguished and
approachable visitor!
So, challenge yourself! Meet with Dr. Kochian. If you're shy, feel free to
sign up in groups of 2-3, or pair yourself with a postdoc. It would be
awesome if every student in our programs had a meeting, alone or in a
group, with this distinguished scientist during his visit. The question
shouldn't be 'are you meeting with Dr. Kochian?' -- but '*when *are you
meeting with Dr. Kochian.'
More generally, in a world of limited finances, the chance to invite
seminar speakers often can't be maintained. Let's make the most of this
wonderful opportunity.
*Please contact Courtney ASAP (deadline: tomorrow) to let her know that
you'd like to meet with Dr. Kochian. *
Thank you and cheers,
Betsy
