Dear graduate students,
I'm writing to compliment you on your excellent choice for your invited
speaker, Dr. Sheng Yang He. As you know from Justin's correspondence, Dr.
He will be speaking on Dec. 10.
I would like to invite you to please sign up to talk with Dr. He during his
visit. The faculty feel strongly that you have priority in meeting with
your invited speaker; please take advantage of this great opportunity!
Even if his work is a bit outside your area of focus, you will learn
something -- or discover potential connections -- from talking with him.
Moreover, an important aspect of professional development lies in becoming
comfortable in talking with colleagues (senior and otherwise) both in and
outside our specific focus areas. This is not only a great chance to
practice, but also a chance to help Dr. He appreciate the quality of our
graduate students. And what a great chance to discuss science with a
distinguished and approachable visitor!
So, challenge yourself! Meet with Dr. He. If you're shy feel free to sign
up in groups of 2-3, or pair yourself with a postdoc. It would be awesome
if every student in our programs had a meeting, alone or in a group, with
this distinguished scientist during his visit. The question shouldn't be
'are you meeting with Dr. He?' -- but '*when *are you meeting with Dr. He.'
:-)
Warm thanks to all,
Betsy
