  WRITING SKILLS IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM

   INTERNATIONAL WRITER'S WORKSHOPS

                                             Fall Semester 2012

                               Thursdays 4-5 p.m., Social Sciences 222

 

These workshops cover many aspects of basic college writing for English as a
second language students. Whether          you are an undergrad or graduate
student or a classified staff member, these workshops are free and open to
all with no preregistration required. Just show up!  (For further

Sep. 27          The  Nuts and Bolts of Academic Writing - Andrea Hernandez
Holm

This workshop provides an introduction to basic concepts of academic writing
in American English. We discuss common concerns expressed by international
students and do writing exercises that address some of them, including the
use of negatives, subjects, and expletives.

 

Oct. 4           Grammar Refresher - John Rabuck

Using a quick test of "grammar instincts," this workshop addresses common
grammar and usage problems like subject/verb agreement, pronoun reference,
misplaced modifiers, and parallel structure.

 

Oct. 11           Principles of Using Articles: A, An, The - Joe Stefani

Many languages around the world have no articles, making their correct use a
persistent problem even for highly proficient English language learners.
This workshop demonstrates, with appropriate examples, how article use in
English is, surprisingly, governed by an orderly set of principles.

 

Oct. 18           Punctuation Refresher - Andrea Hernandez Holm

This workshop provides an overview of basic punctuation rules and styles. We
discuss concerns with punctuation and work together on writing exercises.

 

Oct. 25           Commonly Misused Words - Joe Stefani

Words which sound alike but have different meanings can cause writers
trouble. Knowing which word to use or how to use a phrase correctly can make
a big difference in your writing. This workshop will cover some of the most
common usage errors.

 

Nov. 1            Organization: The Essay, The Paragraph, and The Sentence -
John Rabuck

Organizing any text or piece of text requires a clear sense of audience and
purpose. This workshop looks at various organizational patterns and
rationales for shaping essays, paragraphs, and sentences. We will practice
sentence combining to connect and organize our ideas at the sentence level.

 

Nov. 8            Incorporating Sources and Avoiding Plagiarism - Andrea
Hernandez Holm

This workshop addresses concerns about integrating research into academic
writing as direct quotes, examples, and paraphrases. We will also practice
writing to avoid plagiarism. 

 

Nov. 15          Analyzing and Summarizing a Text - Joe Stefani

This workshop provides an overview of differences between writing an
analysis and a summary. We learn to identify the differences and complete
exercises to strengthen these skills.

 

Nov. 29          Revision: Editing for Readability and Correctness - John
Rabuck

This workshop offers strategies and tips for final draft revision and
editing. We will also focus on proofreading a selected piece of text.
