<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;color:#212121">I too am in favor of making the upcoming faculty meeting recording available. I am currently on sabbatical, and it would aid tremendously to keep everyone on the same page.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;color:#212121"> <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;color:#212121">Instructional support funded by this unit, not the funds received previously from the college, has largely been a black box. During my time as both Grad Director and years of serving as a grad
committee member, we were not provided finances nor asked to vote on financial issues of instructional support. If this has changed, please let the faculty know how and at what level to expect instructional support. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;color:#212121"> <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;color:#212121">After many inquiries, it was documented there were inequities in what had been supported over the years by unit-funded TA positions. For example, ~ 30 enrollment lecture course was provided TA
support while other PLS faculty taught 55-130+ enrolled courses with no support. Faculty were not aware of even the possibility of receiving support from PLS discretionary funds. Likewise, is financial support available for grad students in the summer term?
Documents indicate some students have been funded from the unit during the summer. If so, this would also be of interest to all faculty. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;color:#212121"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;color:#212121">All faculty are contributing to this unit discretionary funds, through teaching SCH or grant indirects, so they should have informed financial votes.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;color:#212121"> <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;color:#212121">As the college ` July 2022 changed their allocation of funds for instructional support to the units (lump sum now compared to previous funds per course), it becomes more important to know what
college and unit funds are used to support instruction. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;color:#212121"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;color:#212121">Please consider updating PLS faculty regarding the financial breakeven for both instruction and instructional support. What unit discretionary funds (now college + unit funds) have been used
and are currently used to support instruction during a time when this unit/college is being asked to limit spending to safeguard positions. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

Meeting</span> (<span style="color:red">sic)</span> should be spent reviewing the budget and the reality of the mandated cuts (Leslie and David?) – discussion of possible options / garner Faculty input to help guide tough choices. If actions have already been
taken by DG/Leslie, an update on those projections would be a good place to begin.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">-Also, homework (was the deadline Sept 30?) was assigned, regarding curricula: (1) removing courses with insufficient enrollment – specific directives targeted courses with single digit student enrollment
(college memo); (2) revising or combining courses strategically to attract students (grad and undergrad) and approaches for increased future enrollment (make courses required so they fill?), and ensure courses on the books/or those that need to be to provide
robust education, are taught as often they should be taught. I doubt there is time to discuss this along with the budget but given this is also a high priority - what is the plan for addressing the college memo/strategic requirements to remove low-enrollment
courses, increase student hours taught and aligned with faculty teaching requirements (number of students per assigned teaching effort mandated university-wide).<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt"> <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">-The retreat would offer a timely venue to begin discussion for review and revision of the undergrad and grad curriculum, seems among top option for retreat priorities. Another topic I’m unclear on are the
criteria for assigning TAships to grad students in SPLS, how many are available any given semester (any, with budget cuts?). Is not regular (each semester/summer) reporting the status; in the past, this was the responsibility of the Grad Program Committee
in consultation with Unit Director/Bus. Admin.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
