<p class="MsoNormal">-Based on the college memos and the Retreat (recording), the budget situation is dire, and requires immediate action.

<p class="MsoNormal">I imagine the entire Faculty should be spent reviewing the budget and the reality of the mandated cuts (Leslie and David?) – discussion of possible options / garner Faculty input to help guide tough choices. If actions have already been
taken by DG/Leslie, an update on those projections would be a good place to begin.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">-Also, homework (was the deadline Sept 30?) was assigned, regarding curricula: (1) removing courses with insufficient enrollment – specific directives targeted courses with single digit student enrollment (college memo); (2) revising or
combining courses strategically to attract students (grad and undergrad) and approaches for increased future enrollment (make courses required so they fill?), and ensure courses on the books/or those that need to be to provide robust education, are taught
as often they should be taught. I doubt there is time to discuss this along with the budget but given this is also a high priority - what is the plan for addressing the college memo/strategic requirements to remove low-enrollment courses, increase student
hours taught and aligned with faculty teaching requirements (number of students per assigned teaching effort mandated university-wide).<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">-The retreat would offer a timely venue to begin discussion for review and revision of the undergrad and grad curriculum, seems among top option for retreat priorities. Another topic I’m unclear on are the criteria for assigning TAships
to grad students in SPLS, how many are available any given semester (any, with budget cuts?). Is not regular (each semester/summer) reporting the status; in the past, this was the responsibility of the Grad Program Committee in consultation with Unit Director/Bus.
