Even if SPLS needs to reduce its budget, eliminating or reducing areas of SPLS research, education, and extension that have notable impact is not the method most faculty will support. The most recently completed document, Phase II, was an 'internal exercise' for faculty to reflect on activities within their units. Due to time constraints, a document was put forward to the Dean without review by a representative sample of our diverse School. The document stated that its vision aligns with most School faculty; however, on review it became clear that not all points in the document fit the majority view. Because the document will become part of the public record, we agreed at our last faculty meeting that it would be appropriate to submit an addendum that corrects any inaccuracies. This will be filed with the Phase II document.

With this email, please find a draft addendum. Its aim is to be brief and straightforward. I would like to ask that you please review this one-page document prior to submission.

Please let me know by 11am on Tuesday, May 15, whether you agree that the addendum is factually correct and can go to Dean Burgess (a note to arnold@ag.arizona.edu that says 'yes' in the subject line is sufficient). I hope to submit a final version to Shane's office by tomorrow (Tuesday) at noon, pending faculty approval. If there are major disagreements I will work with Karen to coordinate a meeting to discuss those issues -- but we hope that we can accomplish this by email.

If I do not hear from you, I will assume that you are comfortable with this document being added to the public record.

Thank you to Tanya for her help in gathering input, and to all faculty who have offered perspectives thus far.

Best wishes,
Betsy
