Attached is a formal invitation and call for applications from Dr. Sean Carroll, vice president for science education at HHMI.<br><br>More than 90 of the country's leading colleges and universities have sent faculty teams to our summer institutes, which we've held for the past eight years. We would love for the University of Arizona to join the many that have participated. Strengthening science education across the nation is a priority for HHMI, the National Academies, and the White House. Expanding on Dr. Carroll's invitation, the Mountain West Summer Institute represents an important step toward accomplishing this priority.</span><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:12.0pt'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><br>On-site meeting expenses, materials, and some meals will be covered by HHMI. Each team’s home campus should provide travel, lodging, and dinner costs for their attending teams. An approximate estimate for the week's lodging and dinners in Boulder is $700 per person. In the Mountain West region, Boulder is readily accessible by driving, thereby minimizing the cost of travel.<br><br>As indicated on the attached application, teams need the endorsement of an administrator (president, provost, dean) who will guarantee attendance costs and support the team's subsequent efforts to enhance undergraduate biology education. Teams of two are recommended, but teams of three will be considered. Each team should include a junior and senior member and may be comprised of faculty members or faculty and instructional staff. Faculty may be active in either instruction or administration.<br><br>Completed applications are due May 20<sup>th</sup>, 2011.
