<p><font size=3 face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>As
reported earlier this week, Faculty Senate endorsed the changes to the Code of
Academic Integrity effective immediately. A summary of the changes for
violations taking place on or after February 3, 2009 is presented below to aid
faculty, staff and students in upholding a campus environment that supports
academic integrity. Faculty should note that there are new, revised forms
that support the new code. These new, revised forms can be found online
at <a href="http://www.dos.web.arizona.edu/">www.dos.web.arizona.edu</a> under
Quick Links to DOS Forms.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p><font size=3 face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>Summary
of Changes:<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p><font size=3 face=Symbol><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Symbol'>·</span></font><font
face="Courier New"><span style='font-family:"Courier New"'> </span></font>
The Code of Academic Integrity shall now be applied to all credit bearing
courses offered by The University of Arizona, including online, regardless of
when or where they are taught.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p><font size=3 face=Symbol><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Symbol'>·</span></font><font
face="Courier New"><span style='font-family:"Courier New"'> </span></font>
Students may no longer simultaneously submit the same work for multiple classes
without the approval of all involved faculty.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p><font size=3 face=Symbol><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Symbol'>·</span></font><font
face="Courier New"><span style='font-family:"Courier New"'> </span></font>
Faculty shall now provide students with advanced written notice of the charges
against them prior to holding a faculty/student conference with a student to
discuss the alleged violation.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p><font size=3 face=Symbol><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Symbol'>·</span></font><font
face="Courier New"><span style='font-family:"Courier New"'> </span></font>
Should the student not respond to the written notice provided by the faculty
member within 15 academic days, then the faculty member can make a decision in
the matter in absence of the student.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p><font size=3 face=Symbol><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Symbol'>·</span></font><font
face="Courier New"><span style='font-family:"Courier New"'> </span></font>
Should the faculty member not provide written notice to the student within 15
academic days of becoming aware of the alleged violation, then the student
shall not be subject to the code.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p><font size=3 face=Symbol><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Symbol'>·</span></font><font
face="Courier New"><span style='font-family:"Courier New"'> </span></font>
Faculty members may now assign “revocation of degree” as a sanction
where appropriate. The sanction “temporary notation on transcript”
is no longer a sanction option. Permanent notations on the transcript
remain a sanction option.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p><font size=3 face=Symbol><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Symbol'>·</span></font><font
face="Courier New"><span style='font-family:"Courier New"'> </span></font>
Students who receive a sanction of notation on the transcript, suspension or
expulsion from the university or revocation of degree shall be granted an
automatic appeal to the Dean of the College.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p><font size=3 face=Symbol><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Symbol'>·</span></font><font
face="Courier New"><span style='font-family:"Courier New"'> </span></font>
When imposing additional sanctions for multiple violations of the Code, the
Academic Dean shall not revisit the decisions made in previous violations and
must impose additional sanctions within 20 academic days. Except in the
cases noted in the point above, the additional sanctions imposed by the
Academic Dean shall be final.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p><font size=3 face=Symbol><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Symbol'>·</span></font><font
face="Courier New"><span style='font-family:"Courier New"'> </span></font>
The timeframe for the Dean of the College to conclude an appeal has been
extended from 15 academic days to 30 academic days.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p><font size=3 face=Symbol><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Symbol'>·</span></font><font
face="Courier New"><span style='font-family:"Courier New"'> </span></font>
Faculty may communicate with students via UA email accounts for academic
integrity matters, including pdf’s of forms.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p><font size=3 face=Symbol><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Symbol'>·</span></font><font
face="Courier New"><span style='font-family:"Courier New"'> </span></font>
There are now provisions for students who are graduating to have an expedited
appeal should the appeal timeframe extend beyond their anticipated graduation
date.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p><font size=3 face=Symbol><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Symbol'>·</span></font><font
face="Courier New"><span style='font-family:"Courier New"'> </span></font>
The academic department head has no formal role in this process (unless they
are the faculty member of record in the course). The academic department
head’s role is to serve as consultant to the faculty in the department.<o:p></o:p></p>
