Dear SPLS community,

The Southern Arizona Science and Engineering Fair is seeking judges in plant sciences for this year's high school competition. Please see a note below from Griffin Davis, who has kindly summarized information about this opportunity to give back to our community and help connect with and support a rising generation of science- and plant-science-oriented young people.

Please see https://sarsef.org/volunteers/judges/ for more information, including the email address to use should you wish to serve as a judge. In past years we have had a strong representation by graduate students, staff, and faculty from SPLS. Thank you to those who have participated previously, and to all for considering this opportunity.

Warm regards,

Betsy

----
We are currently seeking additional Grand Award Judges to represent the School of Plant Sciences at this year’s Annual High School SARSEF Science and Engineering Fair. At present, the Plant Science unit has 22 open judging slots, and we welcome faculty, staff, and post-graduate/graduate professionals willing to evaluate projects submitted by high school students (grades 9 – 12).
In addition to serving as a valuable professional development opportunity, your participation will provide meaningful encouragement to students as they consider future careers in science and engineering. Your representation of SPLS also contributes to the University of Arizona’s proud tradition of supporting scientific curiosity and discovery - now in its 71st year.
The Plant Science judging session will take place Tuesday, March 3, from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM in the Student Union Ballroom. Judges will use provided evaluation criteria to interview students, learn more about their research, and offer constructive feedback. Judging teams will then collaborate to determine 1st – 3rd place awards in the Plant Science category.
If you are unsure about volunteering for the first time, there will be a live Judging Q&A Session on Saturday, February 28, from 1:00–2:00 PM via Zoom. This session provides an opportunity to ask questions and receive guidance as you explore the virtual project hall. Refreshments and a complimentary sack lunch will be provided for participating judges.
We hope you will consider joining us in supporting the next generation of scientists.
Thank you!
