Dear colleagues,

I am very sorry to share the sad news of the passing of Dr. Martha Hawes (retired, ENVS/SPLS).

Martha was a very special spirit — a person of kindness, intelligence, creativity, resilience, and compassion. She mentored many during her time with us, and was unfailingly welcoming and supportive to all. I appreciated her persistence and dedication to her work, despite barriers; her warmth and good cheer; and her joy in learning. She and her husband, Hans van Etten, always did their best to make members of our community feel welcome, both at work and in their home.
