Dear colleagues,
Independent studies and directed research are terrific learning opportunities for our students. Over the years, SPLS has had a strong record of offering such opportunities. I am writing with a few quick updates on this topic, which I hope will be helpful during this busy start to the semester.
1.
If you are arranging for a student to enroll for independent study, directed research, or Honors thesis units, and their enrollment will be under the PLS or PLP prefix -- for example, PLS299, PLS392, PLS399, etc., as opposed to ECOL, MCB, or other prefixes — please connect with Daniel Jiménez Flores, CCed here. Daniel's contact information is below. Students seeking PLS or PLP credit also can reach out to Daniel directly.
2.
For credits that will be under a different prefix, please work with the student's advisor (the student can contact their advisor for the 'independent study / directed research proposal form' in their program).
3.
Please note: in helping students enroll, some of you may have received the (more-complex) internship form. We are reverting to a (less-complex) independent study / directed research proposal form, which some of us may remember from years past. This should streamline the enrollment process. These forms will be available from Daniel for PLS/PLP research hours.
Note: please work with Daniel or the appropriate advisor to ensure that all forms are complete and accepted within the first two weeks of classes in any given semester.
Thank you - and thank you to everyone who incorporates undergraduate mentoring into your work. It's meaningful, impactful, and much appreciated.
Warm regards,
Betsy
