Dear colleagues,
I hope you all are doing well.
As you may recall, at our faculty meeting last Friday we discussed: (1) the pause of graduate admissions across CALES (admissions were paused unless support from sources other than CALES could be confirmed for the duration of the degree); and (2) the budget meeting for CALES, to be held this week.
At this time, we do not have any news with regard to the future budget for CALES, so we continue apace and with excellence as our goal. We expect to hear from the University sometime in the April-June window, as do all other Colleges. Personally, my focus remains on moving forward what we can, and aiming high in our accomplishments. I welcome others to share that mindset.
In the meantime, I did want to share two minor updates.
First, the budget meeting for CALES featured something rather compelling: considerable accord among unit heads, administrators, and leadership of Faculty Council with regard to the importance of several key values, including essential support for our faculty, staff, and student colleagues; the importance of TA support; and the importance of continuing graduate admissions, which was considered by all to be instrumental for the future of our graduate programs.
As a result of the meeting, the pause on graduate admissions has been lifted as of this week. Programs are now able to re-initiate admissions with funding plans that include support from CALES and non-CALES sources. We are uncertain as to potential changes in the funding allocated for graduate programs to units, and are advised to be judicious in considering cohort size. We are following this recommendation and proceeding with care. We'll have more updates, I am sure, in the weeks ahead.
For now, onward, and thank you all for all you do. Please have a restful weekend.
Warm regards,
Betsy
