Dear colleagues,

The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (AREC) has requested a name change to the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics (AAE). Next week, the CALES Curriculum Committee, for which I am currently the sole SPLS representative, will vote on this request. I do not see any conflict between the proposed new name and our work and scope in SPLS and plan to vote to approve the name change unless any of you can provide me with a reason not to vote to approve it - please let me know if you do have an objection!

Background information
The name change is in line with the 2008 name change of a related professional society, from the American Agricultural Economics Association to the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association. Other departments at Land Grant universities have similarly changed their names to acknowledge the greater breadth of their economics work, beyond agricultural and resource economics. The Head of the UA Department of Economics has approved the change, after AREC ceded the "economics.arizona.edu" domain name. I can provide additional information about the request to anyone who would like to know more.
