Dear colleagues,

We hope everyone had a healthy and restful break, and that the new year is off to a good start for you and yours.

We are writing to be in touch about the procedure for appointing the new Interim Director for SPLS. With this note, we would like to 'save the date' for two faculty conversations, pending further communication with Dean Burgess. Please see below for dates and more details.

Briefly, in our Dec. 16 email to the SPLS faculty, we indicated that we anticipated hearing from Dean Burgess promptly about the procedure for appointing our new Interim Director. This was based on communication with him on Dec. 14/15, in which he indicated that he would solicit nominations soon.

However, Dean Burgess did not communicate further with us before the break. After our communication on Dec. 16, we asked again for guidance on Dec. 21, but no response was received before the winter closure.

Early today we received an email from Dean Burgess. In this email he indicated that there is space for faculty governance in the next steps about appointing our Interim Director. However, he has not stated what the procedure for establishing the new Interim Director will be. We anticipate that SPLS faculty will hear from him today, but we are not sure. At this point, the only update we have is that he will not consider a team leadership model (multiple co-directors).

As David's retirement date is Jan. 5, we would like to ask interested parties to save the date for a faculty conversation about SPLS leadership. Then, we can adjust if Dean Burgess comes to us with other or additional guidance.

The proposed times are as follows, and we welcome all faculty to join us online for these conversations. Thank you very much.
