[Plsfaculty] Report on yesterday's CALES Faculty Council meeting

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to share with you a summary of the most recent CALES Faculty Council meeting held yesterday.


  1.  Dean Shane Burgess provided some info on the current budget crisis and what CALES leadership plans to do in response to the central administration’s plans for impending cuts.
     *   CALES leadership plans to provide the central administration with three models of financial realignment based on the requested 5, 10, and 15% cuts. The models will be shared with the shared governance mechanisms in the college for feedback before the deadline of 4-Mar-2024.
     *   The current thinking is that some sort of incremental budgeting model will be implemented for the remainder of FY24 and the entire FY25 before a new financial system will be implemented for FY26. This timeline and the nature of a more permanent financial system will very much depend on the next Provost.
  2.  Taylor Grogg from the Faculty Council/Staff Council Joint Budget Working Group also shared that a 5% budget cut is a more likely and realistic scenario, and the bulk of CALES budget cut is likely coming from attritions and incentivization.
  3.  A new CALES policy on Professors of Practice Performing Research has been drafted by Jon Chorover, Assoc. Dean for Research (see attached). Please send your comments to us within the next week so that we can bring them to the attention of the Faculty Council and provide feedback to Jon’s office.
  4.  Attached are notes provided to the Faculty Council by Jeff Ratje (Sr. Associate Vice President, Finance Admin Operations, ALVSCE) from a meeting with John Arnold. His notes were sent previously to all CALES Unit Heads and Business Officers, and Shared Governance Chairs.
  5.  An announcement/flyer for a planned action on 5-Feb was shared by members of the Faculty Council (attached).
