Dear colleagues,
A new call has come out to recruit postdocs with an interest in teaching to the Pathways in STEM Teaching Excellence program offered through CIRTL (https://cirtl.net/).
I would like to invite you to please share the following information with any postdoctoral researchers in your groups for whom this could be of interest.
I have worked with a CIRTL-Pathways postdoc in one of my courses. The partnership was mutually beneficial for the postdoc and for me, and of great benefit to our students. I'm happy to answer questions about my experience, and I know that the coordinators of CIRTL can answer specific questions about the program.
Warm regards,
Betsy

Dear Colleagues,
We hope you will pass the following information about the UA’s CIRTL Postdoc Pathways Program<https://academicaffairs.arizona.edu/cirtl/postdoc-pathway> to any postdocs in your department who have shown an interest in teaching. The deadline to apply for this year’s cohort<https://academicaffairs.arizona.edu/cirtl/pathway-how-to-apply> is Tuesday, September 3, 2024.
Developed as part of our recent institutional membership in the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL), the one-year CIRTL Postdoc Pathways Program<https://academicaffairs.arizona.edu/cirtl/postdoc-pathway> in STEM teaching excellence is designed to be compatible with a postdoc’s research program and flexible to their teaching interests. Our innovative approach to teaching preparation has been featured in College Teaching<https://academicaffairs.arizona.edu/news/cirtl-postdoc-pathways-program-highlighted-college-teaching> and Journal on Excellence in College Teaching<https://academicaffairs.arizona.edu/news/cirtl-mentorship-study-journal-excellence-college-teaching> as well as in The Arizona Daily Star<https://tucson.com/news/local/new-ua-program-equips-future-stem-professors-with-inclusive-teaching-skills/article_9953feb6-47d7-11ec-92d2-47b82ed94887.html>.
In the first two years since completing the program, eight of our fellows have accepted tenure-track or visiting assistant professor positions, all citing the program as an important factor in the hiring process. Dr. Breanne Lott (2022-2023), who is now an Assistant Professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, says the program “came up multiple times during each campus interview I had, which I think speaks to the importance of a program like this for postdocs in research positions….the CIRTL program is a real asset to us.” Research mentors, too, see the value in the program: “I couldn't be happier with my postdoc’s growth,” one told us in a survey last spring, “and I think this program actually prepared her for her first faculty position in a lot of unexpected ways.”
We appreciate your help in spreading the word and look forward to welcoming the new cohort.
Sincerely,
Gail D. Burd, Ph.D.

Dear Postdoctoral Scholars:
Are you interested in teaching as part of your career? If so, we hope you’ll consider applying to this year’s Postdoc Pathways Program<https://academicaffairs.arizona.edu/cirtl-postdoc-pathway>, hosted by the UArizona’s Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL). The deadline to apply for this year’s cohort<https://academicaffairs.arizona.edu/cirtl/pathway-how-to-apply> is Tuesday, September 3, 2024 with a welcome orientation on Thursday, September 12th on campus (12-2 p.m., location TBD).
The first of its kind on the CIRTL Network<https://academicaffairs.arizona.edu/cirtl>, this innovative one-year certificate program in STEM teaching[cid:image005.jpg at 01DAF22D.7C57A620] excellence will train you to step into your first faculty position with confidence. With an emphasis on just-in-time training and a short-term, mentored co-teaching experience, it has been designed to be compatible with your research commitments and flexible to your individual teaching and learning interests. See more about the program requirements<https://academicaffairs.arizona.edu/cirtl-pathway-at-a-glance> on our website. All postdocs are eligible to apply!
Past cohorts consistently report significant gains in their teaching practice, a greater understanding of undergraduate STEM education, and vastly improved job preparation. Dr. Shaun Davis, Assistant Professor at Hollins University and Postdoc Pathways alum (2023-2024), said that the program “completely transformed how I view undergraduate education…and completely changed how I plan, anticipate, and execute classroom teaching.”
We hope you will consider applying--you can find the online application here<https://academicaffairs.arizona.edu/cirtl-pathway-how-to-apply>. Applications are due September 3, 2024 and require a letter of support from your PI!
