Dear PLS faculty:

This opportunity has come to my attention, to provide nominations for the ARCS (Achievement Rewards for College Scientists) Foundation scholarships which are awarded through the Graduate College. The detailed description of this scholarship is given below. We are allowed to nominate up to three students for this award. If you would like to nominate a student, please let me, Mark, and Alex know. The nomination is a one-page faculty letter of recommendation and is due by Friday, September 29, 2023.

Existing ARCS scholars (do we have any?) can be renominated, by the same deadline.

Thanks

David

The ARCS (Achievement Rewards for College Scientists) Foundation advances science and technology in the United States by providing financial awards to academically outstanding students that are US citizens studying to complete degrees in science, engineering, math, technology, and medical research.

The UA Graduate College can nominate up to 30 doctoral students to be considered for the ARCS Foundation Scholarship for 2024-25. This is a highly competitive and prestigious award, and provides a great opportunity for doctoral students to present their research to interested donors. Of those 30 nominees, approximately 20 of our students are generally awarded.

The ARCS Foundation specifically requests exceptional doctoral students working in the field of Agriculture, Agriculture and Biosystems Engineering, Astronomy, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Cancer Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Computer Science, Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Geo-engineering, Geology, Hydrology, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Neuroscience, Optical Science, Physics, Physiological Sciences, and Plant Sciences.

The ARCS Foundation selection is based on the impact of the student's research and individual ARCS Foundation donor interest, so not all exceptional students will be funded.

Award:

  * $10,500 cash stipend ($8,500 from ARCS, $2,000 from the Graduate College)
  * Full tuition from the Graduate College
  * $500 annual travel grant from the Graduate College
  * Awarded student may concurrently hold a graduate assistantship. If the graduate assistant is .50 FTE, the tuition from the Graduate College will not be able to be used.

Eligibility:

  * UA doctoral track graduate student
  * U.S. citizen (not permanent resident) (no exceptions)
  * Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher (no exceptions)
