Dear State AES Directors,

We are conducting a follow-on national survey to re-evaluate U.S. public plant breeding capacity. This is a 5-year refresh of the previous 2018 survey, which was published in Crop Science<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/acsess.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/csc2.20227__;!!JmPEgBY0HMszNaDT!oymO_5tgSZmwKEH1lRGAfLpuGn0wIVCjBtKy_p1ZwIhRiC5HX6ZJywD7xOQW0W0kjsHhXdpONQGoLPUsNBvhTX0$> and is one of the most highly accessed research articles.

Please circulate the following message to your state's public plant breeders and encourage their participation, as results from this survey will: (1) inform policy makers about plant breeding status/needs; and (2) increase awareness of crops being bred in each state.

Unfortunately, only 40% of public plant breeding programs have submitted survey responses (compared to the 2018 survey). Please view the current breeder map<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.nrsp10.org/us-breeding-program__;!!JmPEgBY0HMszNaDT!oymO_5tgSZmwKEH1lRGAfLpuGn0wIVCjBtKy_p1ZwIhRiC5HX6ZJywD7xOQW0W0kjsHhXdpONQGoLPUsCEp4NXI$> to see if your state's breeding programs are captured. Thanks for your help in completing this objective. The deadline for survey participation is October 15, 2023.

Sincere thanks,

Soon Li

2023 National Survey on U.S. Public Plant Breeding Capacity

All U.S. public plant breeders are invited to participate in a national survey that will help: (1) evaluate status, needs & capacity of U.S. public plant breeding; (2) inform state & national public policy for plant breeding. This is a 5-year refresh to the previous 2018 survey that was published in Crop Science, which was highly accessed and cited. The national survey is coordinated by the U.S. Plant Breeding Coordinating Committee, in partnership with Washington State University.

Complete the survey in 3 simple steps.

  1. Log in (as an existing user) or create a new account at https://www.nrsp10.org/user/login<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.nrsp10.org/user/login__;!!JmPEgBY0HMszNaDT!oymO_5tgSZmwKEH1lRGAfLpuGn0wIVCjBtKy_p1ZwIhRiC5HX6ZJywD7xOQW0W0kjsHhXdpONQGoLPUstanM_VE$>
  2. Add your U.S. public breeding program
  3. Fill out the national survey

Please complete the survey by October 15, 2023. Successful completion of this survey will populate your program on the current breeder map<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.nrsp10.org/us-breeding-program__;!!JmPEgBY0HMszNaDT!tWXyCLq_-4lUW130LU1x0Lqw7lPqbwOUS9Z_B1DZiIXOiInoa1YzndI5rTN1KjxIlkeFt3rG-ZQwVCZEBA$>; the previous map<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.nrsp10.org/main-lab-breeding-program__;!!JmPEgBY0HMszNaDT!tWXyCLq_-4lUW130LU1x0Lqw7lPqbwOUS9Z_B1DZiIXOiInoa1YzndI5rTN1KjxIlkeFt3rG-ZQyXjwv1Q$> was archived.

For each crop program, the survey asks brief questions about general program descriptors, dedicated personnel FTE, access to needed personnel and expertise, diversity of funding sources, and physical and technical infrastructure. Your answers to these questions will be kept confidential and will not be reported in a way that identifies you or your specific program (aside from the existence of your program in your state); patterns and trends across groups of breeding programs will be reported to help identify gaps or bottlenecks where additional resources could benefit the U.S. plant breeding community.

This survey is supported by funding from the USDA NIFA National Research Support Project 10<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.nrsp10.org/__;!!JmPEgBY0HMszNaDT!tWXyCLq_-4lUW130LU1x0Lqw7lPqbwOUS9Z_B1DZiIXOiInoa1YzndI5rTN1KjxIlkeFt3rG-ZQM5LDqvQ$>, and is hosted on the NRSP10 project website at Washington State University. If you have technical problems completing the survey, please contact Dr. Dorrie Main (dorrie at wsu.edu<mailto:dorrie at wsu.edu>), or provide feedback to the team using the NRSP10 contact form (Plant Breeding Survey Category)<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.nrsp10.org/contact__;!!JmPEgBY0HMszNaDT!tWXyCLq_-4lUW130LU1x0Lqw7lPqbwOUS9Z_B1DZiIXOiInoa1YzndI5rTN1KjxIlkeFt3rG-ZS7B3dY5Q$>. If you have issues/questions about the survey, please contact Dr. Soon Li Teh (soonli.teh at wsu.edu<mailto:soonli.teh at wsu.edu>). Thank you.
