Hi All,

As discussed in our February faculty meeting, we are proposing changes to the SPLS Courtesy Appointment Faculty guidelines for two reasons. First, the current guidelines were last revised in 2015. Since then, the Adjunct faculty definition at UA has been changed from being faculty outside the University who were affiliated with a unit to being people who have short term appointments of less than 0.75 FTE or less than a full academic year. These positions are not expected to be renewed beyond a single year.

Second, we would like to be able to allow the Research leaders at the USDA aflatoxins lab who are training students in our unit, as well as others interested in actively working with others in the unit to have unit status.

We are proposing that these people be able to apply for status as Career Track Faculty. The Career-Track Faculty designation by HR is the best category to fit those who used to be called Adjunct faculty. It is a catch all category defined as: “… members of the faculty who are not eligible for tenure and who do not have global, adjunct, or visiting appointments.” See under Faculty Member: https://hr.arizona.edu/supervisors/employment-benefits/employment-categories.

In response to a question raised in our faculty meeting about whether someone at another institution not nearby could apply for Career track faculty status, we have changed the wording to include them by saying: “For example, this title could be employed for those in the University of Arizona region (eg. at the USDA or other local research facility) or elsewhere who have a mutual interest with the unit”

The attached document represents the revisions to our Courtesy Appointment guidelines removing adjunct appointments and adding Career Track Faculty as an option.

Please read this over and we will send out a link for a Qualtrics vote for approval shortly.
