[Plsfaculty] SPLS next steps forward

Dear colleagues,

We would like to thank David for his service as Interim Director, and we wish him well in his upcoming retirement.

At this time, Dean Burgess has let us know that re-starting the external search for a SPLS Director will not be possible in the immediate future given the university's hiring freeze. He suggested that the earliest update on this will be in January, when new information regarding the budgetary position of CALES will be available to him from the University. We will continue to communicate with him on this and related matters.

Along those lines, we have relayed to Dean Burgess several questions that were raised in the faculty poll. We are not advocating for these at this time; instead, we are just asking for information so that we can bring that back to our unit. The questions are: could we pivot at this time to an internal search for permanent director; and would Dean Burgess consider a co-director model (two or more individuals sharing the job) in the interim period. We will relay this information when we hear back.

For now, we will shortly hear from Dean Burgess about the procedure to be followed regarding the selection of a new Interim Director for SPLS. We anticipate hearing from him quite soon. Upon receiving that information, we will organize a few faculty conversations as soon as possible next week, by Zoom, to hear faculty concerns and ideas.
