Subject: Career Skills Competencies Integration

Dear Colleague,

CALS leadership has been working for a couple of years to define competencies for all CALS students that address the national issue of college graduates that are technically competent, yet insufficiently trained in the broader skills required for a career. The first set of competencies encompasses communications, critical thinking/problem solving and leadership/management. These were vetted with our faculty and with more than 50 companies this past year.

Please complete the competency grid by inserting the numbers of the undergraduate course(s) or experiences (capstones, internships and directed research) that you teach which will serve to instruct students in these competencies at the exit level. Grid here : https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xq5B8VLaZ82SiCgKA0W9IyCtVpBZSHXHnu795PgWO1M/edit?usp=sharing

Do not feel that you are supposed to cover all competencies in a course, because you are not. The idea is to see if we cover all of these competencies in our curriculum, not in individual courses. These results will be reported to the Associate Dean for Career and Academic services, and reviewed by the CALS Curriculum and Assessment Committee. We need this information by January 15th.

Ultimately, these grids will be used to inform all of you of the opportunities within our various academic units that are being used to meet the competencies.

Best regards,

Tanya Quist, Dennis Ray
Co-chairs, PLS Curriculum Committee
