[Plsfaculty] Online Course Workshop

Hi all,

As I mentioned in our faculty meeting, several SPLS members will be developing online sections of their courses. We hope that by working together the process will be easier for everyone so I am arranging a series of workshops on the subject.

There are myriad tools available and hundreds of ways to run an online course, but I think it will be most helpful to start simple<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keep_it_simple_stupid> and focus on using the tools. So far I am imagining the following workshops, where "Nuts and bolts" sessions will be opportunities to practice with the online tool(s). Sessions 3 and 4 will cover topics like avoiding plagiarism, automatic grading, and assessment.

1.     Nuts and bolts #1 – how to record lectures with Panopto
2.     Nuts and bolts #2 – how to make quizzes/exams in D2L
3.     Beyond the basics – making your course interesting
4.     What makes a good online course – best practices
5.     Nuts and bolts #3 – how to engage students online (D2L forums and Blackboard live chats)
6.     Nuts and bolts #4 – how to personalize/”brand” your D2L site

If there are other questions or topics that you would like covered, please let me know and we will incorporate them.

Session 1:
We will be joined by Malcolm Elliot from UITS/OIA will walk us through using Panopto to record and distribute lectures. This will be an interactive session, so if you’d like to try it out yourself, please come with a laptop.

Some notes:
* Panopto requires Microsoft Silverlight plugin. This will be automatically downloaded, but from my experience (on a Mac), it doesn’t work in Chrome. Safari is fine.

* If you’d like to try setting up Panopto recordings in D2L, you’ll need a D2L page to work in. I believe you can still work in old sites (from Spring 2013, for example). You can also request a D2L site for Spring 2014 here: https://d2l.arizona.edu/csr/
