Dear colleagues,

Several faculty have approached me recently about opportunities for our
international graduate students to improve their skills and confidence in
English. The UA has outstanding opportunities along these lines, but they
can be quite expensive.

I wanted to let you know of an informal but perhaps useful alternative.
Literacy Volunteers of Tucson coordinates English classes at the
intermediate and advanced level for adults throughout Tucson. The classes
do not come with certificates or any official recognition of completion,
but they are a structured and very positive environment for English
language training (speaking, writing, listening). They are free, and
typically meet in the evenings.

I teach one such class as a volunteer and would be happy to provide more
information if you are interested in sharing details with a student in your
lab. Please respond to me at arnold at ag.arizona.edu.

With best wishes,

Betsy
