Subject: Undergraduate lab placement

Dear Dr. Quist,

My name is Cristóbal Valencia and I was a transfer student that came into
CALS last Fall 2011. I am emailing you to inquire about opportunities for
undergraduates in plant science labs. Do you know of any positions currently
open for undergraduates?

I am a senior currently on leave of absence and am looking for research and
lab assistantships that will help me acquire more experience as I prepare
for grad school. I will be graduating this Fall from Prescott College in
Prescott, Arizona with a 3.8 GPA and have been involved in a number of
research projects during my undergrad that have prepared me to contribute to
ongoing projects with a high degree of independence and collaboration. Last
Fall semester I took courses in genetics, biotechnology and plant pathology
and I'm very interested in plant functional genomics, although lab
experience in any plant science sub-field would be useful to me. I've
completed my course requirements and spent this past summer at the Land
Institute <http://www.landinstitute.org> doing independent research on
flowering-time genes in intermediate wheatgrass as part of a global
perenniality breeding effort for wheat. I am ready to contribute to
large-scale projects and have a suite of lab and field specific skills that
I believe could be an asset to research faculty. I've included my CV and
would love to discuss what options there might be when you have the
opportunity.

I understand you are very busy and I sincerely appreciate your time reading
my email and consideration. If you happen to know anyone else I should get
in contact with, I'd appreciate that information as well. Thank you!

Sincerely,
Cris
