[Plsfaculty] Time-sensitive: Addendum to Phase II document

Hi Betsy,
I would like to submit that the Phase II document, submitted by
Larkins, also puts the CEAC, controlled environment agriculture and Chieri
Kubota (who is named) [quote from Phase II: "e.g., field and
greenhouse-grown vegetable production"] in the same category as both Turf
and Horticulture.
Therefore, I would suggest that the section II of the addendum be
modified to include CEA/CEAC as follows (or in some fashion - maybe too
wordy... but) (you also might want to check for errant " ' " and spelling):
II. The document currently places Turf, Controlled Environment Agriculture
and Horticulture under 'areas to de-emphasize, discontinue, or modify.'
However, the majority of School faculty disagree with this placement. We
ask that Turf, CEA/CEAC and Horticulture be listed under 'Existing areas to
preserve, protect, or enhance,' as these programs support a significant
need in Arizona. Cash receipts for horticultural crops we support for 2010
were $1.96 billion, and the overall economic impact of the golf course
industry on the state of Arizona was estimated to be $3.48 billion when
last reviewed (2004). CEA is more difficult to quantify as it combines
horticultural and vegetable crops. However, the largest producer,
EuroFresh, accounts for over $130 million in tomato and cucumber sales per
year and smaller growers (including Willcox Greenhouses, Sunizona and soon
to be built Wholesum Harvest in Amado) are providing year around fresh
produce. The CEAC also supports growers not just in Arizona but also
around the country and world-wide, being the only such unit to provide
education, research & extension in CEA in the United States.
I am OK with the rest of the document addendum. Thanks.
Pat
