[Plsfaculty] Letter to the Faculty - School of Plant Science Planning Meeting

Dear Plant Science faculty,

After our discussion with Dean Burgess on 1/25/12 it is obvious that our future is in our own hands. We need to come up with a plan on where we see ourselves by 2022 or the Dean will decide our path for us. Remember, we need to double our research productivity in the same amount of time. What does that mean? We do not need consensus but we DO need productive, innovative and novel ideas for moving forward.

We propose to hold our first “planning meeting” on February 10th from 4-6ish immediately after our internal Plant Science Seminar. Shelly McMahon and Betsy Arnold have kindly offered the Herbarium as the location for our meeting. For those that can’t make it we will provide Skype or conference call access. 

Agenda items include (please add your favorite topic):

1) Common themes we can all support as a School – e.g. Feeding the world, supporting Arizona agriculture, phenotyping center

2) Graduate student support

3) Curriculum – Undergraduate 4+1 program, Shennong Center Joint PhD program 

4) Herbarium, Arboretum – Needs and Wants

5) Extension programs – Needs and Wants

6) New Department Head – Internal/External/Candidates

7) New name???? – i.e. School of Plant and Microbial Synthetic Biology
