Subject: [Outreach] Science Fair Mentor

Mikenzie Tremblay (tremblml at alterhs.org) sent a message using the contact form at http://cals.arizona.edu/spls/contact.

Dear Sir or Madam,

To introduce myself, I am a Biology Honors student at Alter
High School. To further my
scientific knowledge and experience of applicable, real-world science information, I am writing to you today to ask whether or not you have an interest in mentoring me in this endeavor. My idea for my science fair is testing nitrogen runoff, growth rate, and number in relation to the amount of fertilizer used to grow radish sprouts. I know that you are active in this field and thus my query.
In being a mentor, it may consist of directing my research with ideas, allowing me access to technology and equipment that my high school cannot provide, and/or answering questions that I may have during my scientific process. This could be done over email, the phone,
and/or in person. If I
would need access to your resources on your premises, I will guarantee that either my Biology Honors teacher or parent would be present. My teacher is Mrs. Jennifer Butler and you can reach her at jbutler at alterhighschool.org or 937-545-0488. You would not need to have constant supervision of me in taking on this role of mentor.
I am extremely interested in plant sciences and want to get as much out of this science fair experience as possible. I want to push myself to understand concepts that I haven’t been taught yet in class; I want to make this project meaningful and not just typical; I want to go above and beyond. I see plant sciences as being a potential career for myself and a stepping stone into the research atmosphere that college provides.

Thank you for taking the time to read and think about my request. Please respond by my email, tremblml at alterhs.org.

Sincerely,

Mikenzie Tremblay
