On Behalf of Dr. David Galbraith:

===========

Dear all:

Your PLS representatives on the School Website Design Committee (Mario
Marquez, Ravi Palanivelu, Tanya Quist, Bill McCloskey, Shelley McMahon,
Barry Prior, and Gabe Rodriguez) have been working with CALS IT
professionals (Matt Rahr, Matthew Harmon, and Toby Torrey) to build the new
site. This is a drupal-based site, which generates web-ages "on the fly"
based on content databases. Drupal is being adopted university-wide, and we
can look forward to the time that automatic updates of content can come from
(for example) your APROL reports. Drupal provides considerable flexibility
in terms of data entry, and of content modification. This means that you
have the ability to control what information is provided about yourself and
your laboratories. However, it also means that you need to enter your
content. My first request therefore is for you as faculty to start entering
your faculty information:

These are the steps you need to follow.
(1) Please go to http://cals.arizona.edu/sps/people/faculty .
(2) Go to the bottom of the page and click on the "login" link.
(3) Enter your netid and password when requested.
(4) Click on the edit tab, and start entering information.
(5) Click on the "save" action button.
(5) Remember to logout when done.

If for some reason you are unable to login, please contact Gabe Rodriguez,
who is in charge of entering all netid identifiers for PLS personnel. If
you have any other questions about entering this information, please don't
hesitate to contact me or any other member of the committee.

Please let me emphasize the website is a work in progress, but we have to
open it up to you now to get the content information entered.

We are also looking for three further specific items of information:

(1) The home page has an item entitled "Featured Faculty". This is a set of
four entries that rotate randomly each time you reload the page. We need
faculty volunteers to be featured (at the moment we have spacers in these
slots). If you are interested, please send us a picture (at least 300 dpi)
relevant to your feature, and a description of yourself and the work you do.
This description should be 120 words or less. We anticipate rotating these
featured faculty slots every couple of months or so, depending on your
responses and level of interest.

(2) The home page has a news bar at the bottom with three rotating items.
Again, we need items to fill this spot, which we think should deal with
topical School issues such as notable publications, student prizes, faculty
awards, etc. Again, these items will be rotated regularly but in this case
to remain topical. An image is needed with a description of the news item
(in this case 50 words or less).

(3) Please provide Gabe with information concerning your graduate students,
postdocs and staff. Specific information (apart from basic contact
information) might include: Project Type and Brief Scope or Title, Awards
and Publications, Associated Interests. Staff and students are welcome to
provide a picture of themselves or of something relevant to them, as long as
the aspect ratio is 1:1 and the resolution is no less than 300dpi. I think
we prefer SVG format rather than JPG (which is lossy).

Please do not hesitate to provide feed-back to me or any member of the
committee. We have provided the following committee members with editorial
access to the following primary pages: David Galbraith (home page, welcome
page and seminars); Shelley McMahon (facilities pages); Tanya Quist
(undergraduate pages); Ravi Palanivelu (graduate pages); Bill McCloskey
(extension pages); Gabe Rodriguez (data entry for all non-faculty); Mario
Marquez (all site). Matt Rahr is responsible for overall drupal design, and
Matthew Harmon for visual layout; Toby works with them. All members of the
committee discuss and provide content aspects (for example, the short
descriptors of research areas).

Please let us know if you have any suggestions as to how to improve the
website. Remember that it is a work in progress and will always be available
for improvements. Some suggestions will be immediately implemented; others
may not be possible (or may be too expensive to implement) given the
structure of the site.

Thanks

David
