Dear Colleague,
I am writing to seek your assistance in identifying applicants for the
position of Chair for the Department of Plant Sciences at California State
Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona). We seek a leader with
interdisciplinary thinking and the ability to provide exceptional leadership
in advancing the visibility and strategic vision of the department.
Candidates should have outstanding leadership and interpersonal skills, a
record of securing extramural funding, demonstrated distinction in teaching,
and a significant record of department, college and university service. The
successful candidate will be expected to articulate and implement a vision
for integrating diverse disciplines and expanding faculty research
productivity in a way that enhances our educational programs.
The Plant Science Department offers three majors; Plant Science, Agriculture
Science and Agribusiness Management. The Department serves 280
undergraduate students and consists of 7 tenure-track faculty. Department
resources include a 1,550-acre diversified farming laboratory/operation;
AGRIscapes, a Center for urban agriculture and horticulture including
classrooms and 40,000 sq. ft. of greenhouses; an average of $70,000 per year
in scholarship funds and a strong industry and alumni base (seven decades of
alumni).
Cal Poly Pomona has active international programs, cooperative initiatives
with industry and other connections that allow its faculty to expand their
horizons in research, outreach, and creativity. Cal Poly Pomona also has a
well-developed support staff, facilities and programs for grant proposals,
funding initiatives, and facilities for various types of research to support
the efforts of active faculty.
The enclosed announcement describes in detail the position, the qualities we
are searching for in a candidate, and information on how to apply. This is
a very important position to our department and the individual who is
selected will have the opportunity to lead a unique and growing program
within the College of Agriculture.
