MacArthur Foundation Announces Final Call for Proposals for How Housing Matters Research Initiative

Deadline: April 8, 2011 (Initial Research Abstracts)

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has issued a Call for Proposals for the final round of competitive funding under its How Housing Matters to Families and Communities research initiative. The five-year, $25 million research initiative is designed to deepen the literature on the effect that investments in affordable housing have on social and economic outcomes, beyond shelter. While MacArthur welcomes proposals on all topics, the foundation is especially interested in studies that address the relationship of housing to the following outcomes: health and independent living of an aging population; public safety, violence reduction, and reduction in criminal justice system involvement, particularly among youth; and educational outcomes.

Research on Public Sector Institutions in Poland

Deadline: April 18, 2011

The Ernst & Young Better Government Programme in Poland invites applications for grants of 60,000 PLN (about $21,000) to support research on the effectiveness of public sector institutions in Poland in one of the priority areas: 1) good governance; 2) health care; and 3) infrastructure and resources.  In each of those a comparative approach able to present Polish experiences in light of those from other countries will be preferred. Joint teams of Polish and foreign researchers are particularly encouraged to apply.

Communication Sciences and Disorders Research Grants

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation invites investigators to submit proposals to the New Century Scholars Research Grant Program for research grants of $10,000. This grant initiative is designed to advance the knowledge base in communication sciences and disorders. The intent of this grant is to initiate new research in the field, and will give priority to studies that are innovative, groundbreaking, or that can meet research needs not yet addressed.

March of Dimes Research Grants

Deadline: April 30, 2011

The March of Dimes research program invites applications for faculty research grants of up to $150,000 directed at the prevention of birth defects. Research subjects appropriate may include basic biological processes governing development, genetics, clinical studies, studies of reproductive health, environmental toxicology, and social and behavioral studies. In Social and Behavioral Sciences, the MOD is interested in research, especially involving change in behavior, that advances our understanding of and ability to prevent the cognitive and behavioral risks that affect outcomes of pregnancy, the perinatal period, and subsequent child development.

The Tree Research and Education Endowment Fund (TREE Fund) supports multi-year research projects (2-5 years in duration) to advance knowledge in the field of arboriculture and urban forestry to benefit people, trees and the environment. Grants range from $7,500 to $25,000.

International Dyslexia Association Grants

Deadline: May 1, 2011

The International Dyslexia Association announces a competitive grant program to stimulate scientific study investigating the value of multisensory instruction (MSI) in teaching reading, particularly to students at risk for academic failure or underachievement such as those with dyslexia. The MSI Grant Program will provide up to $20,000 for new educational, neuroscience, cognitive science, or other research projects on how multisensory components (e.g., visual, auditory, kinesthetic, tactile) in various contexts and combinations do or do not enhance the learning of reading-related skills in various learner populations, including those with dyslexia. Faculty and graduate students are eligible to apply.

New Grand Challenges Explorations Topics

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is now accepting grant proposals for Round 7 of Grand Challenges Explorations, an initiative to encourage innovative and unconventional global health solutions. Applicants can be at any experience level; in any discipline; and from any organization, including colleges and universities, government laboratories, research institutions, non-profit organizations and for profit companies. Initial grants will be US $100,000 each, and projects showing promise will have the opportunity to receive additional funding of up to US $1 million. Social Change Filmmaker Grants

Deadline: May 25, 2011

The Tribeca Film Institute, in partnership with the Ford Foundation's JustFilms initiative, has announced the launch of the TFI New Media Fund. The fund will provide support and funding to nonfiction, social issue film projects that integrate film with content across newer media platforms - from video games and mobile apps to social networks and micro-blogging. The fund seeks to support projects that activate audiences around issues of contemporary social justice and equality around the world and that demonstrate the power of cross-platform storytelling and dynamic audience engagement. In 2011, the New Media Fund will award grants of $50,000 to $100,000 each to four to eight nonfiction projects. The fund also will provide peer support and expert mentorship for producers. Lupus Research Institute Invites Applications for Research Grants for Novel Approaches to Lupus

Deadline: May 27, 2011

The Lupus Research Institute, founded to support highly promising, idea-driven approaches to finding the cause, improving treatment, and curing lupus, is accepting funding applications for novel research projects relevant to systemic lupus erythematosus. Projects on aspects of the disease that have been less extensively studied and applications from investigators in diverse disciplines, including those who may not have previously worked in lupus, are encouraged. Investigations should be relevant to basic, translational, or clinical research on lupus. Both established and new investigators may apply. Applicants should hold advanced degrees and be affiliated with institutions of higher learning in the United States. Selected projects will each receive annual funding of up to $100,000 per year, for a term of up to three years.

The Fahs-Beck Fund for Research and Experimentation supports research that contributes to a greater understanding of social problems affecting individuals, families and local communities. Dissertation grants up to $5,000 support research on problems in the functioning or well being of children, adults, couples, families, or communities, or on interventions designed to prevent or alleviate such problems. Faculty/Postdoctoral grants up to $20,000 are available to evaluate innovative interventions designed to prevent or ameliorate major social, psychological, behavioral, or public health problems, or studies that have the potential for adding significantly to knowledge about those problems.
