Brian,
Brief comments on our lab and research. The dean had an interest in
aflatoxins while at Mississippi State.
Our laboratory is recognized worldwide as a leader in research on aflatoxin
management and the biology of aflatoxin producing fungi. In addition to
our lab work in Tucson, we have field and lab work in California, Arizona,
and Texas, as well as, several nations in East, West and Southern Africa,
Asia, Europe, and Latin America. Our work is supported by USDA Foreign
Agricultural Service, USAID, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and
several European and African Governments and multi-governmental
organizations (i.e. the UN, the World Bank, etc.).
Our research emphasizes participation by both graduate students and
undergraduates. Typically we employ between 8 and 14 undergraduates at any
given time.
Our widest recognition comes from the discovery that atoxigenic
(non-aflatoxin producing) isolates of Aspergillus flavus can be used for the
biocontrol of aflatoxin contamination. In addition to the invention, we
registered the first atoxigenic strain with EPA and developed products and
manufacturing systems for products based on these strains. These biocontrol
agents are currently the leading aflatoxin mitigation agents worldwide.
Please let me know if you have any questions or require additional details.
Best,
---Peter.

Subject: [Plsfaculty] New CALS Dean
Dear PLS faculty,
I will be meeting with the new CALS Dean, Shane Burgess, next week to give
him an overview of the School of Plant Sciences. Although I have a general
idea of what each of you is doing, it would be helpful, and to your
advantage I suppose, if you would send me a short paragraph (not more than a
few sentences) summarizing the focus of your research, teaching and/or
extension activities, and major service responsibilities. Please include
anything else you would want me to communicate about your program. We will
be scheduling a department-wide faculty meeting with Dean Burgess in
September (most likely), and it would be helpful to him to have some
preconceived notion of what is going on in the school.
Thanks,
Brian
