On Behalf of Rachael Mattull:
Attention Plant Sciences Faculty!
We have recently had a bit of trouble informing the Graduate College when
one or more of a graduate student's committee will not attend the oral
examination or the final defense.
The Graduate College has asked me to send out this reminder:
When a student submits the Announcement of Final Oral Examination form to
schedule the dissertation defense, the graduate college checks the committee
on the form to ensure it is valid under Graduate College policy
(http://grad.arizona.edu/academics/program-requirements/doctor-of-philosophy
/dissertation-committee). If the committee that is prepared to participate
in the defense at the scheduled date and time is different from the
committee on the Announcement form, it is vital that the dissertation
director or department communicate that to us before beginning the defense
so that we can confirm the official dissertation committee - i.e. the
committee conducting the defense - is still valid. If a non-valid committee
conducts a defense (or a doctoral comprehensive exam), it is possible the
Graduate College will not accept the result of the defense, and the student
may be forced to defend again. (I have seen this happen, so this is a real
issue.) You can imagine how bad it can be for a student to have to go
through this, especially if he/she faces a deadline for completion of the
degree requirements or submission of the dissertation. The bottom line is,
if the procedure isn't followed, there is no guarantee the defense result
will stand. If you have any questions about this policy, feel free to
contact
