[Plsfaculty] several important items

Faculty,
I would like to make you aware of several items that will affect all of us
in one way or another.
1. The Dean has appointed a Commission on Microbiology Teaching to be
chaired by Dave Cox with myself, Jeff Silvertooth and Jack Schmitz as
members. Vet Sci has lost two more key faculty who teach important
undergraduate courses and these and others need to be covered by current
faculty. It turns out that our Department has as many microbiology faculty
as those in both SWES and Vet Sci so I am certain that we will need to pick
up a couple of these course.
2. David Gang has accepted a faculty position at Washington State
University and will be leaving us at the end of August. David's career has
really taken off and his scientific strengths will be missed at the
University. This position will need to be replaced. One of the focal areas
in the genomics effort that we are putting together is metabolomics so we
should be able to hire a replacement but that will not be in time to teach
the core Plant Biochemistry course for graduate students scheduled for this
spring. Any ideas?
3. Shelley McMahon will be leaving us at the end of the year to take on
new challenges at the University of California, Davis. It is not likely that
we are going to be able to replace Shelley in 2010 so she and I are putting
together a plan that would enable her to continue to manage the Herbarium
for a year or so. There are also Herbarium-specific grants which Shelley
would be able to continue to manage. With regular visits and a longer term
visit in the summer, this should work great for everyone. Shelley had
planned on teaching Plant Anatomy this coming spring but, of course, that is
no longer possible. This is a course that we cannot abandon for even one
year so we will need to figure out how to get it taught.
I hope that you will join me in congratulating both Shelley and David for
their accomplishments in our Department and wish them as much success in
their new positions. Best wishes, ken
Kenneth A. Feldmann
