Mentors serve as "interpreters" of scientific information, helping the students to learn about a biological topic that interests them. Course evaluations consistently show that this type of experience is highly valued by the 181H students. They love the experience of learning deeply about a topic and they appreciate the opportunity to interact with mentors who can share their experiences.<br> <br>Mentors can be graduate students, postdocs, staff scientists, or faculty members who enjoy working with early-career students. The research projects will occur during the month of November, and students will prepare a very short presentation that allows them to share what they have learned with the others in our 181H courses. <br> <br>If you are interested, please see the description below for more information. And please send this invitation on if you know of someone else who might be interested.<br> <br> <br><b>Do you like to “talk biology?” <br></b><br>We are soliciting graduate student/post-doc/faculty volunteers to be mentors for MCB181 honors students in class projects (<i>in silico</i> only, no lab work). <br> <br>What: The mentor will guide one or two small groups of students (~5-6) in identifying a topic, help them to develop a hypothesis, survey the literature to collect scientific data that will help answer the hypothesis and aid in preparing a report of their findings. <br> <br>Mentors are encouraged to present topics of their interest unless they prefer that the students select the topics instead. We hope this approach will encourage potential mentors to sign up because they can discuss topics that they are familiar with, which translates to less time to prepare for their meetings. However, if they prefer they can allow their students to select the topic.<br> <br>When: Four weekly meetings, beginning the week of October 31. The students will present their results back to the MCB 181 honors classes during the week of November 28.<br> <br>Frequency: Meet once a week (and communicate by email or via ‘D2L groups’ as necessary). Mentors will be responsible for taking attendance and evaluating student participation.<br> <br>Where: At a time and place mutually agreeable for the mentor and the students.<br> <br>Why: Great outreach experience, opportunity to develop leadership and mentoring skills and serve as a role model for young, enthusiastic students.
