Hello all,
Thank you to those who have already volunteered! There are still times available for anyone else interested in joining this event. But I also wanted to send out a reminder that we will meet tomorrow at 515 PM in Marley 541H to learn the outreach activity and discuss what to expect. For those of you who don't have Marley after hours access, I will be at the East Marley entrance from 5:10 to 5:15 to bring folks up to the conference room.
If you have not signed up yet, but are interested in joining on March 14/15, here is the sign up link again: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gLI75pkp8IpTzOVZ1wf09z14-dGwbaPikEz4hrjbL1M/edit?gid=0#gid=0
Cheers,
Becca

Subject: Outreach Opportunity at Science City
Hello SPLS Community,
My lab is hosting a booth at Science City at the Tucson Festival of Books on March 14/15 and we are looking for volunteers to join us at this event.
Science City features hundreds of hands-on activities, "allowing the public the opportunity to talk to scientists about planets, astronomy, animals, physics, geology, legumes, seeds and more!" Last year we added a School of Plant Science perspective to the event, and since my lab is a microbiology lab, we talked to the public about environmental microorganisms. We signed up again and were hoping to include more volunteers from our department for this fun and impactful outreach to Tucson residents and beyond.
What do we ask from you?
We want to invite you to join this us in this event. We are looking for interested individuals who are able to spend ~2 hours on either Saturday March 14 or Sunday March 15 at the booth. We already have an activity planned to share with the public, so we'll also ask that you join us for a planning/information session on Thursday March 5th at 515PM at Marley 541H where we will show everyone the outreach activity we do at the event, and discuss what to expect. If you cannot make this and still want to participate, please reach out to me (rschomer at arizona.edu). An added bonus of participating is that we are right in the center of the Tucson Festival of Books, so you can work at the booth and then go check out a talk by your next favorite author!
We would love to have more grad students, and postdocs join us, but we would be thrilled to have faculty, technicians, scientists, or undergraduates involved in this outreach as well. So please do not hesitate based on your position and please share with folks you think would be interested.
Please sign up here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gLI75pkp8IpTzOVZ1wf09z14-dGwbaPikEz4hrjbL1M/edit?gid=0#gid=0
Let me know if you have any questions!
Thanks,
Becca
