[Plantsci] SPLS: Transition in College/Division leadership

Dear SPLS community,

Today we received notification that Dean Burgess has resigned from his administrative roles as Vice President of ALVSCE and Dean of CALES. As shared by Interim Provost Ron Marx, Dr. Mike Staten will serve as Interim Dean, and an external search will be conducted promptly.

This news took many by surprise, and surprises certainly can feel destabilizing. However, I am pleased to share that we continue apace as a School with outstanding students, staff, and faculty; exceptional Extension, instruction, and research; and a legacy of excellence that is exceeded only by our potential. These themes continue to resonate in CALES and to be part of the fiber of who we are.

I have communicated personally with Shane to thank him for his service and for his support of our School. I also have reached out to Mike, with whom I worked for several years through my service with the Bart Cardon Academy for Teaching Excellence, to wish him the best as he takes on this considerable responsibility.

Across our Division, senior leaders and unit heads are united in looking ahead as a team — a product of the past year+, which has brought leadership together in a positive and forward-looking manner. At this time, I see continuity of leadership, vision, and mission delivery, and look forward to working on behalf of our School through the transitions ahead.
