Abstract:
For the last 50 years, the field of genomics has transformed the life of millions of humans. Genomics prospectus covers all areas of human well-being, from agriculture to disease prevention and personalized medicine. Unfortunately, most tribal communities still have no access to the potential of research and education in genomics to improve their lives. Some of the reasons are the lack of trained tribal professionals in genomics and the concerns about manipulation of tribal DNA for unknown purposes. Tribal institutions, federal agencies, and universities are starting the conversation on how to boost literacy in genomics with the necessary ethical responsiveness to traditional views, so genomic science and related disciplines can be utilized and contribute to tribal members' well-being.
