New Course for Fall 2019
Ecological Physiology | ECOL 401/501, PSIO 401/501, ENTO 401, EIS 501
During ontogeny, organisms constantly have to adjust their physiology in response to the environment they encounter. This course will provide an integrative understanding of life history evolution from the perspective of the constraints imposed by their underlying physiology. We will emphasize how physiological tradeoffs at the level of the whole organism ultimately define an organism's life history and fitness. This is NOT a course on physiological systems; rather, the course will provide students with a conceptual approach to the integration of whole-organism physiology underlying life history traits. Relevant physiological, evolutionary and ecological background necessary to understand the concepts discussed will be given in lecture. The course will have a strong bias towards insect but examples from other taxa will also be included.
Course motto: Nothing in biology makes sense except in light of the whole organism.
Instructor: Goggy Davidowitz goggy at email.arizona.edu<mailto:goggy at email.arizona.edu>

Plant & Insect Biological Technicians - Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge (BANWR) - NEW!
The U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) Southwest Biological Science Center in Tucson will be studying grassland health over time and in relationship to land management at BANWR this summer and early fall. We are looking to hire two students or recent graduates (up to 1.5 years post-graduation) to assist with the project.
BANWR is located approximately 60 miles southeast of Tucson and supports semi-desert grassland. The biological technicians will measure vegetation along permanent transects, enter field and quality check data, identify plants, help with pollinator identification and specimen processing, and potentially assist with data analysis and writing reports. Housing will be provided at the Refuge during field work days and other work will be conducted at the USGS offices at the University of Arizona campus.
Core employment is July through September (field work will be conducted in early parts of day to avoid heat) and potentially into late fall. Persons in this position will be hired as contractors ($21 to $30/hour depending on experience) but will be responsible for their own taxes and social security deductions in their contractor status.

Desired Qualifications
• Knowledge of flora of Sonoran grasslands or ability to quickly learn
• Knowledge of routine field data collection procedures and collection of biological samples
• Must be able to engage in physical work, including walking, bending, climbing and working in Sonoran desert, sometimes during adverse conditions
• Experience planning and executing field logistics and safety protocols
• Experience driving 4WD vehicles on highways and in rugged terrain
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
• Experience using topographic maps and GPS units to locate sites in remote areas
• Experience with data entry and quality control
• Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team
• Familiarity with insect fauna and GIS a plus
• Certified in first aid and CPR
