[Plantsci] Seminar- Community Meeting Tomorrow

On behalf of the School of Plant Sciences Diversity and Inclusiveness Committee, we would like to encourage everyone in Plant Sciences to attend the ‘Implicit Bias Training’ on October 16, 2018 from 4-5 pm in Marley 230 with refreshments served before the seminar as usual in the Marley lobby. This is the first Plant Science Community Meeting and the D&I Committee is planning more events. The Implicit Bias Training will benefit our unit by raising awareness and understanding of how we all can be more inclusive in the workplace and classroom.



From the Presenter, Dr. Katherine Wolsiefer:

You are invited to attend a workshop on the role of implicit bias in higher education.  Numerous studies have shown that even people who are highly committed to being fair and just can unknowingly hold and communicate biased attitudes and beliefs towards others. Unconscious or "implicit" forms of bias can seep into our judgments of people who are different from us when we review job applications, interact with colleagues and students, or comment on student work.  When we interact with out-group members, implicit bias can subtly alter our facial expressions, posture, and speech patterns in ways that can convey discomfort or disinterest. Learning how to reduce implicit bias and its effects is an important step toward improving climate, equity and intergroup relations in higher education.
