New Course for Spring 2019
ECOL 596X | Evolutionary Epigenetics
Meeting time: 10 AM - 12 PM, Mondays (tentative)
Research on epigenetic modifications of the genome has exploded in the past decade with the realization that these modifications are central to understanding gene expression and regulation. Yet, the implications of these advances for evolutionary biology are still unclear. In this discussion-based seminar course, we will read recent papers in the field to understand the role epigenetic variation plays in development, gene expression, transgenerational plasticity and adaptive evolution, drawing heavily on recent studies in humans and other mammals. The course explicitly integrates discussion of evolutionary causation and the link between phenotype and genotype with findings in the field of epigenetics to encourage students to debate about if and how current discoveries change our understanding of adaptation and evolution.
Please email Renee Duckworth<mailto:rad3 at email.arizona.edu> for more information and to enroll.

R Labs in November
All sessions will be 9-11 am on Tuesday in the iSpace in the Science-Engineering Library<https://arizona.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=db9ec68208a01ab34170f765f&id=c2b87dd32a&e=71068ef53d>. To get the most out of these workshops, participants should bring a laptop with R and RStudio installed<https://arizona.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=db9ec68208a01ab34170f765f&id=f224cc357d&e=71068ef53d>.

  *   November 20: Open R lab.
  * November 27: Heatmaps in R. Heatmaps are a great way of displaying three-dimensional data in only two dimensions. But how can we easily translate tabular data into a format for heatmap plotting? By taking advantage of "data munging" and graphics packages, heatmaps are relatively easy to produce in R.
