Department News
Congratulations, Regis Ferriere! - NEW!
Regis Ferriere and Jen Wisecaver (Purdue University) just received a NSF Dimensions of Biodiversity five-year grant: “Eco-evolutionary Drivers of Diversity in Toxic Algal Blooms”.
The research will combine ecological, genetic and phylogenetic data, both observational and experimental, with mathematical and computational models to decipher the structure and function of eco-evolutionary feedbacks in blooms of toxic algae, using the haptophyte Prymnesium parvum as a focal species.
The project also includes Will Driscoll (PSU) as a Collaborator. Jen Wisecaver and Will Driscoll are both EEB alumni who worked in Jeremiah Hackett’s lab and received their PhDs in 2012.

Welcome, David Enard!
Dr. David Enard is joining EEB as an Assistant Professor! Thanks to the search committee (Mike Sanderson, Jeremiah Hackett, Katrina Dlugosch, Mike Barker, Heidi Brown, Anthony Baniaga, with great support from Lauren Harrison) and to everyone else in the Department, as well as Dean Joaquin Ruiz and Assistant Dean Kelly Grimm, for helping make this happen.

Congratulations to Katrina Dlugosch!
Katrina Dlugosch was awarded an NSF CAREER Award for her proposal entitled, "CAREER: Rapid evolution of an invasive plant: the role of microbial interactions". As the NSF website says: "The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program is a Foundation-wide activity that offers the National Science Foundation's most prestigious awards in support of early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization." Congratulations, Katrina!

Classifieds
Housemate Wanted - NEW!
I'm Sky and work in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Dept. I'm looking for a housemate to share my 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house in mid-town Tucson (Grant/Columbus area). The house is close to shopping (Trader Joe's, Basha’s, Fry’s, Baskin Robins, Starbucks) and The Loop, has central AC, shared living room, kitchen, off-street parking, and locked bike storage. There is a large backyard that includes a covered patio, passive rain water harvesting basins and contouring, native landscaping, and fruit trees (pomegranate, fig, and loquat). My partner has a dog that spends time at the house a couple days a week so pets are welcome on a case by case basis.
I would like someone with like living habits who is thoughtful of resource use (water and electricity). Keeping common space tidy and easy to use is a must.
On a personal note: I am a dancer in a local dance company, a yoga teacher, and I enjoy hiking/camping and getting around on bike as much as I can.
The room is available for short term/visiting researchers, as well as, three or six month leases with the option to extend or go month to month at the end of the lease agreement. The room is available immediately. Rent is $500 a month and includes utilities and wifi. Call Sky at 541-844-8274 or email sky13045 at gmail.com<mailto:sky13045 at gmail.com>.

Enquist Lab Looking for Undergrads for Fieldwork
The Enquist Lab in EEB is looking for two undergraduate students to conduct fieldwork for credit for the Fall 2018 Semester. Requirements include: a valid driver’s license, being able to hike off trail for several hours, attention to detail, and good note taking skills. The fieldwork is conducted on Mount Bigelow and requires driving to and from the mountain each week for the purpose of collecting data from dendrometer devices on various types of coniferous trees in order to track the weekly change in growth of these trees in this particular environment. This work will take place for approximately six hours each week and will introduce students to collection and analysis of ecological field data. The time students spend utilizing our field and lab protocols will prepare them with common field safety practices along with techniques that require precision using basic lab equipment.

If you are interested, please contact Christine Schirmer at chrissch at email.arizona.edu<mailto:chrissch at email.arizona.edu> with your major, class standing, units load for the Fall Semester, and a statement as to why you are interested in this project. Interviews will begin the week of August 20, 2018.
