April 17. Open R lab. Bring your R questions or just come in to write some code and enjoy coffee and pastries.
April 24: Reproducible reports. What if there was a way to include text and all the code we used for our analyses in a single document? What about a report that includes not only data visualization, but the actual code used to produce those visualizations? With literate programming, we write text and code in a single document - this way, we can update reports and manuscripts with new data or corrections with minimal effort.
A tentative schedule of upcoming workshops is also available at: https://jcoliver.github.io/learn-r/schedule<https://arizona.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=db9ec68208a01ab34170f765f&id=96835a5cdd&e=71068ef53d>

Implicit Bias Workshop Opportunity - NEW!
You are invited to attend a two-hour workshop on Wednesday April 18th from 1-3pm on the role of implicit bias in higher education. Numerous studies have shown that even people who are highly committed to being fair and just can unknowingly hold and communicate biased attitudes and beliefs towards others. Unconscious or "implicit" forms of bias can seep into our judgments of people who are different from us when we review job applications, interact with colleagues and students, or comment on student work. When we interact with out-group members, implicit bias can subtly alter our facial expressions, posture, and speech patterns in ways that can convey discomfort or disinterest. Learning how to reduce implicit bias and its effects is an important step toward improving climate, equity and intergroup relations in higher education.
Please let us know if you can attend, even if you can't attend the whole session, using the link below so that we can make sure we have space to accommodate everyone! An email will be sent out closer to the date with room details. Light refreshments will be served.

Reviving the Southwestern Association of Biologists Meeting: Pan-southwestern Ecology Meeting - NEW!
It has been 13 years since the last Southwestern Association of Biologists (SWAB) annual meeting, and we are writing today to find out if there is sufficient interest to revive the meeting this fall. We have a new name, the Pan-southwestern Ecology (PEN) meeting, which is more fitting. New name but same format. If you are not familiar with SWAB, the meetings gathered interested graduate students and faculty in ecology and related fields. The focus is on universities from Arizona and New Mexico, but other universities are welcome to participate.
It is a great venue for individual graduate students, faculty and labs to find out what others are doing in the region. Because of their small size, SWAB meetings offered more informal interactions with peers than larger national meetings. As in the past, the PEN meeting would be held at the American Museum of Natural History’s Southwestern Research Station, in Portal, Arizona. If there is interest, the station is available Oct. 5 to 7, 2018. We plan to have two invited speakers Friday and Saturday night with a sessions of contributed papers and posters Saturday and Sunday morning. There is also polyester lawn bowling to look forward to.
No membership fee is required and the only cost is for food and accommodations at the research station. The following rates include 3 meals a day, use of meeting facilities and equipment, pool use, WIFI and internet access:
• Shared Triplex: $69/person/night
• Shared Dorm Room: $69/person/night
• Private Dorm Room: $72/person/night
• Camping (up to 7 tents): $47/person/night
If you are interested, please send a return email expressing your interest as well as (for faculty) your assessment of the potential interest of your graduate students to Lara.Schmit at nau.edu<mailto:Lara.Schmit at nau.edu>. Please respond before May 15, 2018, so that we can determine we have critical mass to move forward. If we receive 50 affirmative responses, NAU’S Merriam-Powell Center will organize the meeting and send out instructions for payment and abstract submission.
Thank you in advance for your consideration, and please contact NeilCobb at nau.edu<mailto:NeilCobb at nau.edu> with any questions. Of course, we would be grateful if you would share this announcement with interested colleagues working in the Southwest who we may have missed.
