New Course for Spring 2018
ECOL 596A | Evolutionary Ecology
This graduate-level course will explore standing questions at the interface of ecology and evolution, with an emphasis on how evolutionary processes affect the ecology that we observe in natural populations. Underlying concepts will be reviewed briefly in lectures by the instructor, but a large portion of class time will be spent discussing relevant literature and major questions in the field. Students will develop knowledge of key hypotheses and findings in evolutionary ecology, and hone their skills in dissecting primary literature and identifying unexplored research avenues.
The class will meet twice per week, with day and time TBD based on participant schedules. The course will be taught by Katrina Dlugosch, who can be contacted at kdlugosch at email.arizona.edu<mailto:kdlugosch at email.arizona.edu> for any questions.

New Course for Spring 2018
RNR 458/558 | Ecosystem Ecology
Rapid changes to Earth's biosphere will influence how natural and managed ecosystems functions and alter the services they provide. Issues from conservation biology to sustainability and global climate change rely on a comprehensive understanding of ecosystem processes. In this class, students will learn the principles of terrestrial ecosystem ecology, examining the influence of biological, ecological, and physical processes on energy and material flows and water and elemental (carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous) cycling in ecosystems. We will use "Principles of Terrestrial Ecosystem Ecology" by Chapin et al. (available for free download through UA library) and relevant classic and contemporary literature to guide our discussions. Graduate students will have the opportunity to present their research and lead a lecture on a topic related to their work. All students will develop and present a 5-minute talk in the IGNITE format on a topic relevant to the course and their interests.
The aims of the course are:
     1. To understand why and how ecosystems form the fundamental unit of ecology-climate interactions and the state of natural resources.
     2. To understand how water, nutrients, energy and carbon enter and cycle through ecosystems.
     3. To understand how species differences and the composition of ecological communities influence ecosystem function and the quantity and quality of natural resources.
     4. To understand current changes to natural ecosystems and be able to explain and predict how ecosystems and the resources they provide will respond to future environmental changes.
     5. To understand human dependency on ecosystems and motivate students to stay informed of environmental issues.
This 3-unit course will meet twice per week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 AM - 12:15 PM in ENR2 Room S210. The course will be taught by Rachel Gallery and Dave Moore.

In this workshop, we'll cover an introduction to the version control tool Git in the RStudio environment. We'll also get connected with the popular repository GitHub (and explain the difference between Git and GitHub).
November 28: Open R lab. Bring your R questions or just come in to write some code and enjoy coffee and pastries.
