Larry Venable & Russ Monson Named ESA Fellows
Congratulations to EEB Professors Larry Venable and Russ Monson who have just been elected as Fellows of the Ecological Society of America<http://arizona.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=db9ec68208a01ab34170f765f&id=5d140f0ae5&e=71068ef53d>.
Fellows are members who have made outstanding contributions to a wide range of fields served by ESA, including, but not restricted to, those that advance or apply ecological knowledge in academics, government, non-profit organizations, and the broader society. They are elected for life.
Larry was Elected for revolutionary work on plant community ecology and life history evolution, exemplifying the power of crossing temporal and spatial scales, mixing empirical and theoretical approaches, and integrating inquiries from physiology to evolutionary dynamics.
Russ was Elected for his contributions to seminal discoveries in the areas of plant adaptation, biogeochemical cycling, and ecosystem-atmosphere gas exchange. His work has clarified patterns of C4 photosynthesis evolution, soil organic nitrogen uptake by plants, forest carbon cycling, and the exchange of volatile organic compounds between ecosystems and the atmosphere.

THMS Science Fair Judges Needed
It is that time of year again! Tucson High Magnet School is holding our Science Fair on March 3rd from 9 AM to 3:30 PM in the THMS Library (in the Main Building). We have long benefited from the participation of UA med students and UA COS graduate and undergraduate students as judges. This is an excellent outreach opportunity to support STEM education in our community. Please join us for any portion of the day that you can. It is especially helpful if you can come in the afternoon to talk to the students. A full explanation of the International Science and Engineering Fair judging criteria will be provided. If you attend anywhere from 9 AM - 12:30 PM, you will be reading student posters and providing written feedback. If you attend anywhere from 12:30 - 3:00 PM, you will be interviewing students and providing oral & written feedback at the Poster Session.
We appreciate your support very much. It is fun and you may be surprised at how sophisticated the projects can be! Our research program has been running since 1995 and many of our students work in University of Arizona research labs.
Please contact Margaret Wilch<mailto:Margaret.wilch at tusd1.org> and let her know when you will be able to attend or if you have any further questions!
