What's New in Germ Warfare?
Microorganisms are the number one cause of mortality in the world today and number three in the United States. Changes in lifestyle, demographics and rapid evolution of disease causing microorganisms have caused major challenges in infection control today. New strategies in infection control are needed to reduce the exposure of populations to pathogens, especially in indoor environments where we spend most of our time in the 21st century. To develop these strategies an understanding of where and how we are exposed to pathogens is needed. Our work is centered on identifying critical exposure areas to pathogens in the environment, determine risks of infection with the use of quantitative microbial risk assessment models, and development of new disinfectants and self-sanitizing surfaces.
